What is TMS
A non-invasive, medication-free, FDA-approved treatment modality that targets specific brain regions through focused stimulation to address various clinical conditions
How long is a session
Treatment protocols are tailored to each patient and the condition being addressed. Session durations typically range from 3 to 40 minutes, with a full course generally consisting of 30 to 50 sessions.
Who gives TMS
Psychiatrist performs initial assessments and measurements needed for TMS. Psychiatrist also determines the protocol to be used which is individualized. TMS technicians give treatments.
Age range
16 and above
When can TMS not be done
Patients are assessed for contraindications on initial assessment
Do I need a referral
A psychiatrist will assess your suitability for TMS. You may be referred by your psychiatrist, psychologist, or general practitioner, or you may self-refer and undergo an assessment with Dr Eksteen.
Will my medical aid pay
Medical Aids are increasingly recognizing the value of TMS. At present, funding can be motivated for under high-tiered medical aids. For members on lower-tier plans, costs are typically not covered. Dr Eksteen will assist your treating psychiatrist with the motivation process to support access to TMS treatment.
Cost of TMS
Most treatment protocols fall within a total cost range of approximately R30 000 to R40 000 for the full course. This equates to roughly R700–R1 200 per session, depending on the specific protocol utilised.
Side effects of TMS
One of the key advantages of this treatment is its favourable side-effect profile. Unlike many other medications, adverse effects are generally minimal. Patients most commonly report transient headache, mild scalp discomfort, or temporary fatigue.
