CONDITIONS TREATED WITH TMS
Depression
Unlike medication, which primarily affects neurotransmitters or brain chemicals, TMS targets the brain’s neural circuits. It provides an effective way to “reboot” these circuits and has been FDA-approved for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression since 2008.
Anxiety
TMS is not a standard indication for the treatment of anxiety disorders; however, emerging research indicates that it may be effective for both generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Further studies are still needed to confirm these findings
Addictions
Studies have evaluated gambling, nicotine and substance abuse. Results based on these studies demonstrate that TMS has shown potential as a treatment for addiction.
OCD
Research show that TMS treatment for 6 weeks results in a statistically significant 30% reduction in symptom severity. This magnitude of response is on par with responses seen in SSRI treatment; however, TMS may achieve these results faster.
Stroke Rehab
Treatment of stroke with the use of TMS is has been demonstrating benefit as shown by randomized controlled studies.
Chronic pain
TMS can be a safe and effective add-on treatment for chronic pain by stimulating nerve cells in the brain, which can alter the brain's pain-processing networks and reduce pain perception. It is used for conditions like chronic neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia, with some patients experiencing significant pain reduction.
PTSD
Randomised controlled studies evaluating TMS for anxiety-related disorders, including PTSD, have shown meaningful clinical benefit, with the majority demonstrating positive treatment outcomes.
Chronic Tinnitus
Treatment of tinnitus with the use of TMS has shown positive results in terms of decreasing the severity of tinnitus. There have been numerous randomized controlled studies that demonstrate this effect.
